This year the checklists are going by not totally completed. The decorations are not entirely up around the house. The advent calendar doors are not all being opened.
But we've had giggles on the couch.
We've had visits to Christmas lights all over, and seen Santa a few times.
We've made cookies and we'll have our home filled with dear friends to celebrate.
This year, it's not about the lists.
It's not about being the cutest most funnest family on the block.
It's not about keeping up with the traditions of other families.
It's about MY FAMILY.
It's about helping those we can, within our means, and when we can help them.
It's about being nice to strangers we see, walking around with a smile on our face, and then just enjoying our time together.
Hope yours is just as well.
Tis the season to have joy and be happy and be satisfied with the life you have.
Merry Christmas season to you.
May the next 11 days be full of peace and wonder.
Sincerely,
Chow (and the Wilde family)

My Goal for This Christmas
I am SOO EXCITED for Christmas. I have been scanning the radio to and from work for Christmas music....with no luck.
I am also eager to figure out where the decorations will go in the new digs. And the lights on the outside of the house. And I'd like to get into gift shopping... but I want Black Friday deals.
The other thing that I keep thinking about doing this Christmas is that I want to read some Christmas-themed books.
So Obviously, the first on the list is:
Any other ideas of what I can read?

The Almighty Thanksgiving Holiday!
This Thanksgiving we had my mom down for a visit. I was having so much fun, I forgot to get a ton of pics of the food/table setting (Hil, help me out on this one).
But there are some pictures to be shown. Before I display them, let me just say that this holiday is really Russ's big show. He is the chef in the family, and he should get most of the credit for the success of Thanksgiving. I tend to be a spectator and table-setter.
This year did not disappoint. Russ's cooking was delicious. The company was excellent. The traditions held strong. And in fact, that is where I will start: The Traditions.
Tradition: Thanksgiving morning exercise.
While Thanksgiving is wonderful, I always feel guilty about all the food. So a few years ago I started doing Turkey Trots on this day of deliciousness. This year I did the Gruene Turkey Trot with my mom:
Tradition: Black Friday Shopping
As I said earlier, Thanksgiving is really Russ's shining moment. And that extends beyond the food- it goes down to Black Friday Shopping. Russ knows how to do it right- without being part of the horde of people who trample over each other to get stuff. Russ is slick about it- strategic. He could write a book about it.
Again, this year he was at his best. He got the baby necessities for $150, boots for me, and a bunch of other stuff that is still being delivered. We are all stocked up on wedding gifts, white elephant gifts, and everything on our wish-lists... well pretty much everything.
Lastly, Crafts.
With my mom in town we crafted and crafted until we were sick of it. We made this manger scene for my brother's family, we sewed tutus, we embroidered a quilt, and on and on. It was a great way to spend time together!!!
And if you're reading this and you feel tired after hearing about all we did, well you'll be pleased to know Russ and I were both sick the following weekend. We played too hard and paid the price the next few days! I think next year we'll slow it down!

Here's how I did:
I came in 106 out of 108 in my age group.
But I finished!
The Food: An outside Thanksgiving.
This year we decided to eat Thanksgiving outside. We have some friends who eat outside every year. Russ is always incredibly jealous and wants to be like them- or at least eat Thanksgiving like them.
So this year we did!
Tradition: Toast (see the above pictures)
Every year I get Russ to make a toast, followed by each person saying something they're grateful for. Russ's toast was great, and I am always amazed at the things that people are grateful for.
Tradition: Christmas set-up
Russ & I set up our Christmas decorations after we eat Thanksgiving. I like to do it this way for a few reasons. First, it gets your blood going a bit after eating so much. Second, you can be slow about it. I like to alternate between setting stuff up/playing games/eating pie/ watching the football game. Finally, I get to enjoy the Christmas decor a little bit longer.
Here's how the tree turned out:
Tradition: Fredricksburg Christmas Pyramid lighting
This tradition started last year. Basically we go to Fredricksburg to watch the annual lighting of the Christmas Pyramid. Yes, I said Pyramid. Google it. It's a German thing. This year was bigger than last year. And it included a performance of the Nutcracker!
Tradition: Black Friday Shopping

Look what I Made!
So I wanted to make Russ something for Christmas. And, in case you didn't know, Russ collects gnomes:
See? And those are just the new gnomes that were added this Christmas. There's a dozen more around the house.
If you know someone who loves gnomes and you want to make a gnome for them, click here.
What do you think of the gnome? More importantly, what should we NAME this gnome???

Christmas Music
What's your favorite Christmas song? (this is a somewhat rhetorical question. But you can tell me if you really want to)
For me, there are SO many I love. Yes, I'm one of those people who start missing Christmas around... June. And I have different favorites for the different aspects of Christmas. My favorite is "Stille Nacht" by Mannheim Steamroller.

But my favorite Christmas album is Celine Dion's Christmas CD. Yes, I secretly love Celine Dion (don't tell Russ). And it's sort of cultured... the last song is in French!
But this year I've discovered a new favorite. Russ and I have been fans of this band since undergrad. And recently, thanks in part to Qrank, we've discovered why many think this is the best Christmas song ever:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As a sidenote, there are some AWFUL song lyrics in Christmas songs. The one that comes to mind for me right now is from "The Little Drummer Boy" and it goes like this:
The ox and lamb kept time pah-rum-pum-pum-pum
As if the song isn't fictional enough... the animals know how to keep musical time? I drawn the line at.
Oh, and if you think of any, do share! I love me some bad Christmas lyrics.

Christmas Break! Have a cookie
Back by popular demand, Homemade Oreos! Last year the treats we passed out to our neighbors were a variety of cookies. Everyone looked at the plate and said, "Ah, man I thought you would do the homemade oreos again."
Well, after that reaction, we decided to go back to the Homemade Oreos this year. And the responses have been all-positives.
Lesson here: If it's good, and a crowd-pleaser, don't change it.

Oh Christmas Tree...
Russ and I have an odd-orable Christmas tree. And there's a story behind it.
Flashback to our first married Christmas (2007).
December 2007 we were paying for a condo in St. George, an apartment in San Marcos, and our first house payment. To be frank: Money was TIGHT! It was a month of transitions and we counted our house as a Christmas gift to each other.
The residual effect was that we had no money for a Christmas tree. Or lights, or anything! I thought we should try to get a little something to celebrate. I had borrowed a tiny Christmas tree for a lesson at church (it was about 4 inches tall). I asked the lady who lent it to me if I could borrow it for Christmas.
This sweet, elderly lady was quite dismayed that we were about to have our first married Christmas without a tree. She told me to stop by her house and she'd get something together for me.
I will never forget her kindness. Sounds cheesy, or whatever, but it was nice to have a tree. And we still use this tree. It's fake, it's maybe 6 ft. tall, it's not pre-lit, and most of the ornaments are second hand.
Oh, and the lights only work if our little elf is plugged in working on his shoe. So.. it also makes noise. I'll have to make a video of this guy and post it on here this weekend. It's hard to explain the elf.
But I LOVE it!!!

I Just Needed a SUNday.
Today has been FABULOUS. Here's why:
- Only 1 hour church today, so people were 'encouraged' to go to the Nativity Display at the Stake Ctr.
- Friends over for lunch (about 10 of us total!)
- Eating Breakfast for lunch. YUM!
- White elephant gift exchange. I ended up with Bath & Body Works stuff and Russ got some fancy hot cocoa.
- Card games, cookie making, football watching, and group naps.
- Walking to get the mail with Russ
- Working on a scarf for Christmas
- Getting ready for Monday

The No-Reason Blues
I think because there are so many happy things going on this time of year, so many moments of just being happy and enjoyment, that our body tries to balance it out. So... for no good reason, we feel blue. I guess I should say I feel blue.
We had the ward party last night and it was a lot of fun. I enjoyed getting ready for it, being there, singing and playing guitar, and all that jazz. But I got home last and just felt sad. I guess I shouldn't say for no good reason. I know why.
Russ wasn't there. The GM of Perdenales was on trial and a jury came back with a 'guilty' in the afternoon so my husband was on tv instead of next to me. So I guess that's why I was blue.
Well today's a new day. Time to get happy.

People On the "Nice" List-Law School Style
Law school is known to be full of rude, selfish, Alpha personality students. And I think that may be true, for some schools. However, that is not my law school experience. I find most classmates to be very nice. Now, there are some students I attend with that have not been kind. They've been just mean. But these are often due to a "bad day" or stress. It is not indicative of who they really are.
Some good examples of the wonderful people in law school is those present at last night's Christmas party. We talked, laughed, took goofy pictures, ate delicious food, and played fun games. I am so grateful for the good friends I have, at home in San Marcos and at law school. Thanks ya'll for being awesome!

Kicking off Christmas in Fredericksburg, Texas
Over Thanksgiving weekend we went to the tree and pyramid lighting in a the cute (and Mormon historical) town of Fredericksburg, Texas. This little German town is adorable! If you're looking for a good place to go to for a honeymoon or a weekend getaway- GO TO FREDERICKSBURG!
Alright, we started off at the Salt Lick, one of the best BBQ restaurants in Texas. It was delicious:
Alright, we started off at the Salt Lick, one of the best BBQ restaurants in Texas. It was delicious:
Then we headed to the F-burg. We did a little window shopping, in which I purchased Ms. Twinkle Toes. An ornament made just for me because I love ballet and hippos:
Find it here.
Next we grabbed some of the FREE hot chocolate and cookies. Yes, the city gave us free food! We found our spot to see both the tree and the pyramid. Now the pyramid. I bet you're wondering what a pyramid has to do with Christmas. But, as the mayor told us, the Christmas pyramid is a German tradition. And this pyramid was built in Germany and shipped to this town, so it is authentic.
So we find out spot, and the mayor begins thanking everybody who helped. We are then told that we will be singing two Christmas songs in German.
My response: AWESOME!
So we sing "O Tannebaum" and "Still Nacht". There is something wonderful about singing a Christmas song with complete strangers while staring at a dark Christmas pyramid. I loved it. I loved doing it with Russ and his family. It will be a great memory for the years to come!
Finally it was time. We counted down and the tree and pyramid were lit up!
So for the Wilde family it's official! Christmas Season 2010 has begun!

Christmas Oreos
They haven't been filled but they're baked. I got a new cookie scoop
the other day and it worked like magic. I have a feeling this is the
first of many batches of goodies I'll be making this week.
